Tips for Growing the Synsepalum dulcificum From Seed

  1. Acidic Root Conditions: The miracle berry plant thrives in very acidic soil conditions, with a pH range of 3.5-5. Maintaining the right acidity level is crucial for its growth and development.
  2. Short Seed Viability: The viability of the miracle berry seed is relatively short. Once exposed to air and starting to dry, the embryo’s lifespan is limited to just a day or two. To maximize germination success, it is best to plant the seeds immediately after extracting them from the fruit.
  3. Slow Initial Growth: When grown from seed, the miracle berry plant takes time to establish itself. It typically takes almost a year to produce just a few leaves. However, with optimal conditions, including bright artificial grow lights, you can expedite the growth process. Generally, the plant starts fruiting after about two years, with a significant growth rate increase in the second and third years.

I Have Successfully Grown 2 Miracle Berries From Seed…In Canada!

To prove that anyone can grow miracle berries, even in challenging climates, I embarked on a journey in Canada. I planted my miracle berry seeds at the end of August 2017, and after four weeks, they germinated on September 25, 2017. Two years later, one of my plants flowered, and six months after that, it finally started producing the coveted miracle berries. Inspired by my success, I decided to share my experience with others who aspire to grow this extraordinary plant at home. Regardless of your location, as long as you can meet the plant’s basic requirements, you too can enjoy the wonders of the miracle berry.

Grow Miracle Fruit Indoors – with Low pH and High Acidity

pH DOWN! Synsepalum dulcificum Needs Acidic Root Conditions

Achieving the right pH balance is crucial for the miracle berry’s growth. Contrary to popular belief, it can be successfully cultivated using low pH levels. The secret lies in starting with acidic soil from the beginning.

To achieve the desired pH level, I employed an unconventional technique. Initially, I acidified my potting mix by adding over-fermented kombucha, which resulted in acetic acid or vinegar. By adjusting the pH of my tap water to around 4 using a mixture of tap water and kombucha vinegar, I created an ideal environment for the plant’s growth. In the past, I have also used phosphoric acid to lower the pH; however, I encountered some issues due to a faulty product. Eventually, I switched to organic acids, such as citric, fulvic, humic, and carbonic acid, resulting in improved growth. When adjusting the pH, it is essential to avoid guesswork. Invest in a pH meter or use litmus paper to precisely monitor the pH level before fertilizing.

Why Do Miracle Berry Plants Need Low pH?

The preference for low pH conditions in miracle berry plants is rooted in nutrient availability. These plants thrive in acidic soils, as they provide an abundant supply of micronutrients like iron and manganese, as well as macronutrients like ammoniacal nitrogen. In contrast, alkaline conditions with high pH levels and low iron content can lead to yellowing leaves and potentially harm the plant. By acidifying the water and using an acidic potting mix, you can create the perfect environment for the miracle berry plant to thrive.

Synsepalum dulcificum Care & Cultivation

High Humidity? Miracle Berry Climate

Contrary to popular belief, the miracle berry plant does not require high humidity to flourish. Originating from West Africa, where climates can vary greatly, these plants have adapted to tolerate drier conditions. In fact, my own experience growing miracle berries in the dry climate of Alberta, Canada, has been successful despite low humidity levels.

To ensure optimal growth, focus on providing consistent irrigation, maintaining good hydration, well-balanced nutrition, root aeration, and adequate light. These factors are more critical than obsessing over humidity levels.

Miracle Berry Substrate / Potting Mix

When choosing a potting mix for your miracle berry plant, opt for an acidic medium that retains moisture while also offering good drainage and aeration. A blend of 50% peat moss and 50% perlite works well, although you may need to adjust the ratio based on your specific climate and watering schedule. Aim for a well-balanced mix that requires watering every 5-10 days. If your potting mix is drying out too quickly, add more peat moss, and if it retains moisture for too long, increase the amount of perlite.

Fertilizer & Nutrients

To support the growth of the miracle berry plant, a combination of organic and synthetic fertilizers is recommended. Organic fertilizers, such as rock dust, blood meal, and bat guano, can be used three to five times per year. Sprinkle a quarter teaspoon over the potting media or mix it into the potting mix during repotting. In addition, synthetic fertilizers should be applied at a quarter strength with every watering. Consider using a well-rounded formula, such as MSU Orchid Fertilizer or other options, to ensure a consistent flow of nutrients.


While the miracle berry plant can tolerate full sun, it generally thrives in partial shade or filtered sunlight. In my experience, placing the plants in front of a south-facing window with triple-pane glass has yielded successful growth. However, it is essential to monitor the leaves for any signs of discoloration or leaf issues. Adjust the lighting conditions accordingly to maintain a healthy and vibrant plant.

Growth Cycles & Flowering Synsepalum dulcificum

The miracle berry plant tends to follow a seasonal growth pattern, although this may vary depending on your specific climate and conditions. During the winter and spring, the main stalk and branches experience significant growth, leading to a more bushy appearance as the leaves fill in. Flowering typically occurs during late spring through summer, with fruit development occurring from early spring to summer.

The time it takes for the miracle berry plant to mature and flower can range from two to three years, with the plant reaching a height of over 1.5 feet. The flowers themselves are unique, with self-fertilization being the primary mode of pollination. However, better fertilization rates can be achieved when multiple plants are flowering simultaneously. To pollinate the flowers, gently run a toothpick around the stigma, stimulating pollen release. Repeat this process for all open flowers, ensuring proper pollination for optimum fruit development.

Fruits generally take around 35-42 days to mature after being pollinated. Once the berries turn red, allow them to ripen for an additional 7-10 days before indulging for the best flavor experience. However, keep in mind that the berries have a limited shelf life, usually lasting 21-28 days on the plant.
